Two opportunities to find out what is held in the miles of archives in Dundee University.

The archives are open to members of the public, free of charge, and hold extensive collections of interest to a wide range of researchers and family and local historians. Areas covered include education, religion, social and business history, medicine and health, and local and family history. The main collections are:

  • University Collections: relating to the University of Dundee and its predecessors and to the development of further education in the region
  • Ecclesiastical Collections: including the Brechin Diocese of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Glasite and Sandemanian Churches and the Arbroath Methodist Church
  • Business Records: relating to businesses in the Tayside area in particular to the linen and jute industries and the latter’s connections with India
  • Medical Collections: hospital, asylum and management archives from NHS Tayside, records of the Dundee medical school and related organisations and individuals, and papers of overseas medical missionaries.
  • Local History: records of individuals and organisations in the Tayside area showing changes in the economy, society, leisure pursuits, town planning and the built and natural environment
  • Photographic Collections: over 130,000 images. Major collections include those relating to the University, Dundee and the local area, a missionary collection from Palestine and the Michael Peto collection (pre and post-war Britain, the arts, especially the London ballet scene, Cambridge Prospect Theatre Productions, Eastern Europe, Israel and India)
  • Maps and Plans
  • Books: collections of local books and newspapers including many rare items; books relating to Scottish history and to British labour, social and shipping history
