The archives are open to members of the public, free of charge, and hold extensive collections of interest to a wide range of researchers and family and local historians. Areas covered include education, religion, social and business history, medicine and health, and local and family history. The main collections are:
- University Collections: relating to the University of Dundee and its predecessors and to the development of further education in the region
- Ecclesiastical Collections: including the Brechin Diocese of the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Glasite and Sandemanian Churches and the Arbroath Methodist Church
- Business Records: relating to businesses in the Tayside area in particular to the linen and jute industries and the latter’s connections with India
- Medical Collections: hospital, asylum and management archives from NHS Tayside, records of the Dundee medical school and related organisations and individuals, and papers of overseas medical missionaries.
- Local History: records of individuals and organisations in the Tayside area showing changes in the economy, society, leisure pursuits, town planning and the built and natural environment
- Photographic Collections: over 130,000 images. Major collections include those relating to the University, Dundee and the local area, a missionary collection from Palestine and the Michael Peto collection (pre and post-war Britain, the arts, especially the London ballet scene, Cambridge Prospect Theatre Productions, Eastern Europe, Israel and India)
- Maps and Plans
- Books: collections of local books and newspapers including many rare items; books relating to Scottish history and to British labour, social and shipping history
